Share, Baby, Share!

SpaceShare at EarthDance

Earthdance was really fun this year -- we got a great booth location and filled up 4 poster-sized pages on the rideboard!

Spaceshare has a strong presence at Earthdance every year, with over 600 people signing up online to share rides, then dozens more at the festival. The event attracts thousands of people each year from all over the world to Laytonville, California: a 3 hour drive north of San Francisco, so carpooling and ridesharing is especially important.

Arthur and I hosted the SpaceShare booth at Earthdance with more information about sharing rides, sharing rooms and greening festival events. Many people stopped by to utilize the last-minute rideboard, chat about their own communities or simply share space (and shade!) at the Spaceshare booth. Earthdance was a success this year -- what a great event for Spaceshare to be a part of!

Hope to meet you at the festivals next year! -- Galit Erez

Green Events Guide

Laura's internship developing the Green Guide is wrapping up, and we're entering beta testing.

If you want to help SpaceShare's mission, this is a great opportunity for a small but important role. Take a look, tell us what you think. If you have web design skills, we'd love a little help polishing the site. Or just send us photos you've taken of green activities at festivals. Blog about the Green Events Guide, tell friends, use it next time you plan a party. Quote of the Month

"A sound banker, alas, is not one who forsees danger and avoids it, but one who, when he is ruined, is ruined in a conventional and orthodox way along with his fellows, so that no one can really blame him".
-- John Maynard Keynes

Year in Review

I broke my leg badly at the beginning of the year, so I'm happy to call a slow and stable year a success.
  • Conferences continue growing: We've had especially successful sharing results with some wonderful healing-oriented events, such as the Center for Mind-Body Medicine trainings, massage therapists, naturopathic physicians and holistic nurses. One of the fun parts of my job is the chance to see how different communities approach sharing, and how many people are happy to look out for each other.
  • Festivals held steady: As last year, the festival community has used SpaceShare with a lot of excitement, but hasn't returned enough volunteer energy or money to be sustainable. Unless we immediately find a sponsorship marketing person and an onsite festival exhibit coordinator (interested?), there will probably be some retrenchment of our alternative-economy approach, we'll be asking for cash payments more and running booths less. At the same time, this January, Jeff and I will be working on contacting many more festivals than SpaceShare has ever tried to contact, and we'll see if a more traditional cash-for-service approach can spread our green work.
  • Green Events Education In 2008 we laid the foundations for promoting greener events, educating event planners who don't focus on greening on the steps they need to take. In 2009, we'll see if it works! I hope that Laura's work with the Green Events Guide will be taken up by another intern each year, and that we can help reach the thousands of events that would like to be green but face a steep learning curve.
SpaceShare doesn't ask for donations. Donate to someone else, participate and create with us. Other than festival volunteers, we don't have too many super-simple volunteer roles. We look for co-creators: people willing to put in the time and energy to be self-managing without someone looking over your shoulder. Is that the kind of world-changing role you've been looking for? Or you and your friends? Volunteer, intern, or joining together to earn as we work, there are a lot of wonderfully effective roles for people who are serious about making a difference. This winter, we especially need some folks with an eye for graphics and design!
